Subject: Alignment of the Horizontal Stabilizer   By: Mike Jones

By Mike Jones

P 371 3/89

Photographs 3 and 4 show the leveling blocks I used to facilitate alignment of the horizontal stabilizer. Drilled to accept a 3/8 NF bolt and nut, the blocks were hot melt glued to the fuselage in the areas shown. The bolts in photo 3 are used to adjust the pitch, while the third bolt, in photo 4, is used to level the horizontal parallel to water level 100. The contact surfaces of the bolt heads were radiused slightly in a lathe to prevent scoring the surface of the horizontal (the same result could be achieved by chucking the bolts in a drill press and taking a file to the rotating head of the bolt). Once the horizontal was properly located, the bolts were secured to the horizontal with hot melt glue. The advantage of this method over shims is that all interior laminates and exterior fill may be applied without disturbing the locating fixture. Please disregard the holes in the sides of the wood blocks. These are left over from a previous project.
